New Delhi. In a welcome development, the Department of Consumer Affairs has directed the NCCF and NAFED to further reduce the retail price of tomatoes to Rs. 70 per kilogram, effective from July 20, 2023. This decision comes as a result of the declining trend in tomato prices, benefitting consumers who have faced rising food costs.

Previously, tomatoes were introduced into the market at Rs. 90 per kilogram and later reduced to Rs. 80 per kilogram on July 16, 2023. The new directive of Rs. 70 per kilogram ensures even greater affordability and accessibility for consumers.

To address the increased prices, NCCF and NAFED procured tomatoes from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Since the start of retail sales on July 14, 2023, a total of 391 metric tonnes of tomatoes have been procured and distributed to major consumption centers in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
