Former CISF chief Sheel Vardhan Singh appointed UPSC member

New Dalhi: Sheel Vardhan Singh, the former Chief of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has been appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), as per an order from the Ministry of Personnel. Serving as the Director General of the CISF from November 2021 to December 2023, Singh's appointment to the UPSC, responsible for conducting civil services examinations, was approved by the President.

Singh joined the Indian Police Service in the year 1986 at the age of 23 and was allotted Bihar cadre. During his distinguished career, he has held many important and sensitive positions in the state of Bihar and during Central Deputation to Government of India. 

The UPSC, led by a chairperson, can have up to 10 members, each serving a term of six years or until reaching the age of 65. Singh, with 37 years of distinguished service, is recognized for his intelligence expertise, strategic thinking, and contributions to national security. Having played key roles in intelligence gathering, analysis, and formulating security policies, he enhanced India's international security standing during his tenure at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Singh, a recipient of the President Police Medal for meritorious service in 2004 and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2010, is also known for his interests in sports, yoga, literature, and cultural exploration. Following Singh's appointment, three vacancies for UPSC members remain. /BI/
