Hyderabad: In a remarkable stride towards sustainability, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has announced that the entire energy consumption at the airport and its ecosystem is now powered by green energy. This groundbreaking initiative, realized through a partnership with Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), marks a significant milestone in the airport's commitment to environmental responsibility.

The implementation of this eco-friendly solution allows Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, inaugurated in 2008, to reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 9,300 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Spanning across 675 acres of land, the airport serves as a natural carbon emissions sink, absorbing approximately 240 tons of carbon dioxide from the environment each year.

The airport's transition to 100 per cent renewable energy is made possible by a combination of its own 10 MWp solar power plant and the supply of green energy from TSSPDCL. This strategic integration of green energy sources revolutionizes the airport's operations, aligning it with global efforts to combat climate change.

The GHIAL also proudly announced its status as a Carbon Neutral Airport, having obtained Level 3+ "Neutrality" accreditation from the Airports Council International as part of its prestigious Airport Carbon Accreditation program. Furthermore, the airport's operations have resulted in substantial energy savings of approximately 15.5 million units (MU), showcasing the efficacy of their sustainability efforts. /BI/
