Kochi: District Collector NSK Umesh, a distinguished officer of the 2015-IAS batch and a graduate in electrical engineering, has played a crucial role in advancing the Kochi Corporation's initiative to establish its first decentralised organic waste composting plant at Manappattiparambu.

Umesh's proactive role and commitment to sustainable solutions were evident during the inauguration of the project, implemented with the support of the global network ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability).

The event, graced by Mayor M Anil Kumar, showcased Umesh's dedication to effective waste management projects, aiming to significantly reduce the transportation of organic waste to the Brahmapuram plant.

Drawing attention to the achievements of the Kochi Corporation in decentralised waste management projects, Umesh highlighted the municipality's success in addressing various environmental challenges.

Under Umesh's leadership, ICLEI implemented the project as part of the ongoing canal rejuvenation initiative. The decentralised organic waste composting plant, operating with electrical assistance, has the capacity to transform organic waste from approximately 1,000 households into high-quality compost, making a substantial contribution to environmental sustainability.

Utilising modern organic waste composter machines, Umesh's initiative enables the efficient composting of a mixture of kitchen waste, including vegetable peelings and food leftovers, and agricultural waste like husk and straw, totaling 30 to 40 kg in just 15 minutes. The subsequent production of fertilizer takes place within 10 to 12 days.

Noteworthy is the plant's operation without generating odours or discharging polluted water, exemplifying Umesh's commitment to eco-friendly waste management practices.

The testing phase of the plant's operations commenced on December 1, 2023, marking a step towards Umesh's vision of enhancing sustainable waste management in Kochi. With a background marked by his commendable interventions during the Wayanad floods in 2018, Umesh continues to make valuable contributions to public welfare and environmental sustainability. /BI
