Kollam: The Kollam district in Kerala is gearing up to launch a proactive initiative aimed at addressing the rising rates of suicide within the district in March this year. The district administration led by District Collector N Devidas, has devised a comprehensive prevention program to tackle mental health challenges head-on.
According to newspaper reports, central to the initiative is the early detection of anxiety, depression, and stress, coupled with the provision of professional assistance to those in need. With a keen focus on identifying underlying factors contributing to suicide, such as domestic abuse, health concerns, substance abuse, and financial instability, the administration is deploying a multifaceted approach that spans various socio-economic sectors.
Establishment of confidential channels for individuals to share their mental health concerns with experts is of particular significance. Devidas puts special focus on this aspect, emphasizing that timely intervention can significantly mitigate depression-related issues and save lives.
To maximize community engagement in mental health care activities, the administration is leveraging the resources and reach of organizations like Kudumbashree and ASHA workers. These grassroots networks will play a crucial role in ensuring that support services reach those who need them most.
In addition to proactive measures, the administration is committed to raising public awareness about suicide risk factors and warning signs. Counseling services will be readily available for those in need, with a particular emphasis on educating youth about social media literacy and mental well-being.
As preparations for the program's launch gather momentum, stakeholders from various government departments are coming together to coordinate efforts. A committee, spearheaded by Devidas, has been formed to oversee the initiative, reflecting the administration's dedication to a collaborative approach.
