NTPC's first-of-its-kind waste-to-charcoal plant in Varanasi nearing full operation

Varanasi: Varanasi's Urban Waste to Charcoal Plant, initiated by NTPC, is on the verge of full-scale operation after undergoing successful testing. The plant is the country's pioneer in waste-to-charcoal technology. It situated in the Ramana area and is poised to convert 600 metric tons of city waste into 200 metric tons of coal daily.
Established by NTPC and inaugurated in February, 2024, the plant has been undergoing trial runs since then. Presently, it processes 50 metric tons of waste into green charcoal daily, with testing progressing smoothly.
Ashish Ranjan, Senior Manager of Waste to Energy at NTPC, confirmed the seamless trial and testing phase, emphasizing that once completed, the plant will operate at its maximum capacity. Post full operation, it will have the capacity to generate 200 metric tons of green charcoal daily from Varanasi's waste.
The transportation of waste to the plant from different parts of the city will be facilitated by garbage transportation vehicles operated by Varanasi Nagar Nigam, as per officials.
