New Delhi: Fintech leader PhonePe has forged a strategic partnership with Chennai Metro Rail Ltd to introduce digital ticketing services, offering commuters a convenient and efficient way to travel to their desired destinations.

The service allows passengers to enjoy a 20% discount on electronic tickets compared to traditional offline purchases. With the new system, a single smartphone can now facilitate the purchase of QR tickets for up to six individuals simultaneously, streamlining the entry and exit process at Chennai Metro gates.

As part of this collaboration, PhonePe will roll out key services in phases, including the booking of single and return journey tickets through PhonePe Switch and the ability to recharge physical smart cards via PhonePe Switch.

M A Siddique, Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "This collaboration with PhonePe provides our Chennai Metro commuters with a seamless option to obtain QR-tickets, contributing to efficient operations. By promoting quick solutions like QR tickets, we aim to encourage public transit, alleviating city congestion, particularly during peak hours."

Yuvraj Singh Shekhawat, Chief Business Officer-Merchant Business at PhonePe, commented, "We believe that this partnership will be another big step forward in our journey of creating a digital payments ecosystem for transit use cases, thereby contributing towards the vision of a digital and cashless India."

To utilize the PhonePe service, passengers can navigate to the Switch section in the mobile application, select the Chennai Metro icon, and input details such as origin and destination stations and the number of passengers. The ticket can be booked via the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), generating a digital QR code within the PhonePe application for scanning at metro entry and exit points.

This innovative collaboration aligns with the broader goal of fostering digital solutions for public transit, making travel more convenient and supporting the nation's vision for a digital economy. /BI/
