New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ninth National Handloom Day celebrations in New Delhi today, where he launched the e-portal 'Bhartiya Vastra evam Shilpa Kosh - A Craft Repository Portal of Textiles & Crafts'.

Developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), this groundbreaking digital platform aims to weave together the rich tapestry of India's textile heritage, serving as a hub for knowledge, research and access to diverse crafts.

Addressing a gathering of over 3000 weavers and artisans from across the nation, PM underscored the pivotal role of the handloom industry, highlighting its vibrant amalgamation of tradition and modernity. Emphasizing the arrival of India on global platform, he said, "The India of today is not just 'Local for Vocal,' but also presenting itself on the world stage."

As he toured the exhibition showcasing intricate hand-woven treasures, PM interacted with weavers, recognizing their exceptional craftsmanship. In his address, he also revisited the Swadeshi Movement, connecting it to the independent economy of India and its inspiration for choosing National Handloom Day.

Reflecting on the significant contributions of the handloom sector, PM said it positively impacted government schemes by providing social justice and employment. He highlighted the 'One District One Product' initiative, promoting district-specific specialties and the forthcoming Ekta Mall that would promote handicraft and handloom from across the country.

He also acknowledged the role of the GeM Portal (Government e-Marketplace) in facilitating direct sales for artisans and weavers, underscoring efforts to ensure their integration into the digital age.

The event, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, brought together a diverse array of stakeholders from handloom clusters, NIFT campuses, Weaver Service Centres and various other institutions. The launch of 'Bhartiya Vastra evam Shilpa Kosh' portal heralds a transformative step towards preserving and promoting India's rich textile and craft heritage.

The event also included a captivating film, 'संगठन से सफलता', highlighting the empowerment of weavers and the transformative impact of a more connected ecosystem.
