New Delhi: RailTel, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, has been tasked with a significant project in Odisha. Awarded by the Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), RailTel will undertake the establishment of an IP-MPLS Network Connectivity in Odisha under the project titled OdishaNet Phase 1.0, with a work order worth Rs 113.46 crores.

This ambitious project aims to connect all districts of Odisha state via OPTCL’s OPGW optical fiber connectivity to the state capital. Utilizing state-of-the-art fiber network technology, RailTel will ensure the delivery of desired Quality of Service (QoS) throughout the network.

The infrastructure deployment will involve linking the State Head Quarter (SHQ) to each District Head Quarters (DHQs) using spare fibers of OPTCL’s OPGW cable. The end links will extend from the OPTCL grid to the District Collector’s offices, with provisions for co-location with the OSWAN POP, ensuring efficient network operations.

Despite the absence of a ring network, the reliability of the OPGW cable promises an uptime of over 99%, ensuring consistent connectivity. The network will leverage IP-MPLS technology, incorporating carrier-grade routers and DWDM technology, rendering it scalable and adaptable to future demand.

Phase 1.0 of OdishaNet sets the stage for broader connectivity initiatives, with plans to extend the network to Blocks, Gram Panchayats (GPs), and villages. The project emphasizes performance monitoring from the existing SNOC (State Network Operations Center), with a dedicated EMS (Element Management System) to integrate with SNOC for efficient service provisioning and monitoring.

Primarily intended for government-to-government (G2G) applications, the surplus bandwidth could be commercially leased to generate revenue. Moreover, the project aims to rationalize existing leased networks from operators once the commissioned network is operational.

Additionally, the project encompasses the provision of supply and installation of IP-MPLS data networking infrastructure, leveraging underutilized OPGW cables. It includes extending underground last-mile fiber connectivity from OPTCL PoPs to District Headquarters, with provisions for future upgrades and expansions.

The OdishaNet Phase 1.0 project not only promises enhanced connectivity across the state but also lays the groundwork for future technological advancements and digital inclusivity in Odisha. /BI/
