Shimla: Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN) has inaugurated India’s first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh. Led by Chairperson and Managing Director Geeta Kapur, the project heralds a new chapter in clean energy infrastructure.

The innovative project, unveiled on Thursday, resonates closely with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, signifying a proactive approach towards green energy integration in the power sector.

The state-of-the-art Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is poised to generate 14 kilograms of Green Hydrogen daily during 8 hours of operation, storing it at a pressure of 30 bars across six storage tanks. Powered by a 20 Nm3/hour capacity alkaline electrolyzer, the project taps into renewable energy from SJVN’s 1.31 MW Solar Power Plant in Wadhal, Shimla.

Beyond electricity generation, the green hydrogen will cater to the High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel Coating requirements of turbine underwater parts, augmenting operational efficiency and sustainability.

During the inauguration ceremony, Ms. Kapur also unveiled the Centralized Operation system for the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) and 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station (Rampur HPS), successfully operating Unit-2 of Rampur HPS from the NJHPS Control Room. This milestone underscores SJVN‘s dedication to technological advancement and operational excellence. Recognizing the concerted efforts of the involved teams, she emphasized the need for sustained diligence to achieve complete operational integration between NJHPS and Rampur HPS.

The event witnessed the presence of key stakeholders, including Manoj Kumar (Head of Project, NJHPS), Vikas Marwah (Head of Project, Rampur HPS), Harish Kumar Sharma (Head of Department, Electrical Design), and senior officials from NJHPS, Rampur HPS, and Corporate Headquarters.
