New Delhi: Veteran journalist-turned-politician Harivansh Narayan Singh has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, marking his return to the Upper House following the completion of his previous term. The nomination fills the vacancy created after the retirement of Ranjan Gogoi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Singh on his nomination, describing him as a respected intellectual whose contributions have enriched parliamentary discourse. In a message, he expressed confidence that Singh would continue to play a significant role in strengthening democratic debates.

Singh, 69, has served as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since 2018 and is widely known for his composed and balanced conduct while presiding over proceedings. This will be his third term in the Upper House, having first been elected from Bihar in 2014 and re-elected in 2020.

With a background in journalism, Harivansh has been associated with several key parliamentary committees, including the Business Advisory Committee and the Committee on Rules, and has also chaired the Committee of Privileges. His renomination is seen as a recognition of his legislative experience and his role in shaping informed public discourse.
