Sanjiv Shankar takes charge as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax

New Delhi: Senior IRS officer Sanjiv Shankar (1993 batch) has taken over as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, marking another significant milestone in a career spanning over three decades in tax administration, public finance and policy.

Prior to this, Shankar served as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, where he played a key role in overseeing financial management and expenditure frameworks in a critical public-facing ministry. His earlier tenure as Joint Secretary (Broadcasting) in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting between 2021 and 2025 saw him engage closely with policy, regulation and the rapidly evolving media landscape.

Shankar’s experience also includes field and investigative roles. As Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Pune, and earlier as Director of Income Tax (Intelligence & Criminal Investigation), he handled complex cases involving tax enforcement and financial scrutiny, contributing to strengthening compliance systems.

His elevation to Chief Commissioner brings together deep institutional knowledge across taxation, financial governance and policy implementation, at a time when the tax administration continues to focus on transparency, efficiency and technology-driven reforms.
