PM Modi at BRICS Summit: Calls for stronger multilateralism, global south cooperation, and responsible AI

New Delhi: At the BRICS Summit Plenary Session on ‘Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out a forward-looking vision to make the BRICS platform more effective and credible in an increasingly multipolar world. Speaking to fellow leaders and global stakeholders, PM Modi emphasised the need for internal reforms, solidarity with the Global South, and responsible technological advancement.

PM Modi opened his remarks by underlining the need for BRICS nations to first reform and strengthen their internal systems. “Our credibility in advocating for reformed multilateralism depends on how effectively we govern ourselves,” he said. Stressing the importance of economic cooperation, he urged the BRICS-led New Development Bank (NDB) to ensure that project approvals are demand-driven, financially sustainable, and aligned with the bank’s long-term credit strength.

Highlighting India’s commitment to the Global South, PM Modi said BRICS must serve as a platform to address the developmental needs and expectations of emerging nations. He pointed to the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform—established in India—as a model initiative that could help countries share knowledge on agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate change adaptation.

Taking this vision further, PM Modi proposed the creation of a BRICS Science and Research Repository to facilitate collaborative innovation and ensure that scientific breakthroughs benefit not only BRICS countries but also the broader Global South.

Another crucial dimension of the Prime Minister’s address was the strategic cooperation on critical minerals and technology. He called for collective action to ensure resilient, transparent, and secure supply chains. “We must make sure that no country weaponises access to critical resources for its own narrow interests,” he cautioned.

Touching on the rising global discourse around Artificial Intelligence, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to developing and governing AI responsibly. “India believes in using AI to enhance human values and capabilities. Our approach, guided by the principle of ‘AI for All’, aims to balance innovation with ethical safeguards,” he noted. He advocated for a shared BRICS framework on AI governance that ensures equitable access while mitigating risks.

In closing, PM Modi urged BRICS nations to set global benchmarks by following the principle of ‘Lead by Example’. “The Global South has high expectations from us. India is committed to working shoulder to shoulder with all our BRICS partners to meet these expectations and achieve shared goals,” he affirmed.

As the world navigates geopolitical complexities and rapid technological changes, India’s call for pragmatic cooperation, equity, and responsibility finds strong resonance—positioning BRICS as a critical voice for the future.
